Matteo Berrettini

Watch Berrettini and the first thing you notice is the serve. He uncoils from a full windup, lands heavy in court, and hunting for aces comes naturally to a right-hander built with that kind of torso torque at age 30.

He carries 14 career titles and sits 43rd with 1,115 points, but recent days are workmanlike: 10 wins against 9 losses this season for a 53 percent clip. Forehand in full swing, look for the full-leg drive that pushes opponents sideways. The backhand, flatter and less explosive, usually gets drawn into crosscourt rallies, so a savvy returner works the hip that side after a kick serve out wide.

Born in Italy, active year-round, Berrettini tends to find his feet fastest on quicker surfaces where the ball flies through clean air. Short points suit him. At his title-winning best, he seizes the second ball.
